Anita de Monte Laughs Last by Xochitl Gonzales
In 1985 Anita de Monte, a rising star in the art world, is found dead and her tragic death is the talk of New York City. By 1998, when Raquel, an art history student, is preparing her final thesis, Anita's name has been all but forgotten. On College Hill, surrounded by privileged students, Raquel feels like an outsider with students of color, like her, in the minority. After Raquel becomes romantically involved with a well-connected older art student, she attempts to straddle both worlds. When she stumbles upon Anita's story, it raises questions about their relationship, which eerily mirrors that of the forgotten artist. Anita de Monte Laughs Last is a propulsive, witty examination of power, love and art.
