Joan Hodges – Sheroes Quilt In-Person
Joan Hodges is an African American quilter living in Hempstead who creates Afro-centric quilts and dolls telling the stories of Black American history. For this project she created a quilt with Sheroes of Black History, highlighting the women who have been central to her life and her narrative.
Joan Hodges was born in the Brownsville section of Brooklyn in the early 1940s and is the daughter of Roberta and John Hodges, descendants of southern slaves. Both of Joan’s parents came to New York during the “The Great Black Migration” to seek a better quality of life. Joan has been quilting for a number of years, having been taught by Hempstead native Ora Kirkland.
